Direct answer
A 2D-code project is not only an artwork change. Define the data carrier and encoded data, ensure the printer and substrate can produce it, verify grade and readability at normal speed, and prove every scanner, vision system and business process that depends on the code.
Separate the symbol from the data
A QR code, DataMatrix or another 2D symbol is the carrier. The project must also define the identifier, application data and destination. A code that scans to the wrong product record is not successful simply because a camera reads it.
Create a data specification showing which elements are fixed in pre-printed artwork and which are generated on the line. Define ownership for GTINs, batch, date, serial or web destination data.
Assess printers, substrates and code size
Print method, resolution, ink or ribbon, surface energy, curvature, glare, condensation and web movement all affect quality. Test the production substrate and the smallest permitted code at the longest required data string.
Allow quiet zones and protect the code from seams, folds, crimp areas, label edges and high-gloss reflections. Where a code is overprinted, verify the complete range of line speeds and head-to-pack distances.
Verify rather than only scan
A handheld scanner proves that one reader can decode one sample. Barcode verification assesses print-quality characteristics against the agreed application standard. Use a verifier and test samples from start-up, normal running, reel changes and the worst production conditions.
Define the response to a failed code: stop, reject, reprint, quarantine or manual inspection. The response must prevent an unreadable or incorrect pack continuing unnoticed.
Prove the downstream workflow
Test warehouse scanners, retailer or customer requirements, aggregation if used, data resolvers and the fallback process during network or printer faults. During a transition, some applications may need the existing linear symbol and a new 2D symbol to coexist.
Use a controlled pilot SKU, record scan performance throughout distribution and only then expand the format range.
Information to prepare
- Define symbol, identifier and encoded data
- Approve size, location and quiet zones
- Trial the real substrate at minimum and maximum speed
- Verify printed quality, not only readability
- Test every downstream scanner and data destination
- Define reject and line-stop behaviour
- Control artwork and variable-data versions
